MAN SURVIVES PLUNGE AFTER LANDING ON SPORTS CAR

On Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 10:45 AM, a man landed on the roof of a sports car after allegedly leaping from the 39th floor of an Upper West Side apartment building in an apparent suicide attempt, police sources and witnesses said.

The 23-year-old victim miraculously survived his 10:44 a.m. plunge from the 40-story tall West End Towers on West End Ave. and was rushed to St. Luke's Hospital in serious condition, police said.

He suffered two broken legs and a bruised lung and was set to undergo emergency surgery, sources said.

"He looked like a pretzel," said Anthony Monteforte, a contractor who was working nearby and heard the victim crash onto a Dodge Charger sedan parked on a deadend street on the building's west side. "There was not much blood."

Investigators are till trying to determine from which floor the man jumped.

After his fall, the victim could be heard yelling out nonsensical phrases while complaining about his leg, Monteforte added.

"I can't believe this. My car saved his life," said Guy McCormick, 40, the Dodge's owner.

McCormick said the car, which he had borrowed from his wife, was totaled with a smashed rear windshield and damaged trunk.
